We celebrated the 4th of July by going to see the fireworks at Sugarhouse Park with our friends, Trevor and Caryn Paulesn. Except for being forced to listen to Ryan Schuppe singing songs about corndogs, we had a great time! We were very impressed with the length and quality of the show and I think we'll be coming back next year for more as long as we can tolerate the crowds afterward! We didn't make it home until midnight, and although I felt horribly guilty for keeping Emmett up so late, he handled it all very well.
Even though there isn't a very good area to play at here, we've been trying to get out of the house more. Sometimes Emmett's friends come out to play and we all have fun together. They even share their toys with Emmett and one of his favorites is this pink princess car that belongs to Kiera, because it plays lots of fun music that he can bounce up and down to while he scoots along. We might have to buy him something a little more "manly" later on though. :)
In preparation to go to Bear Lake, I decided to take Emmett swimming for the first time at a nearby pool. Emmett was a little scared at first and it was a bit tearful on our first few attempts to get into the water. At the beginning, there was no way that he was going to ride in the inflatable that we bought him! However, after playing with Mommy for a while he warmed up to it and we had a great time.
A few days later we were on our way to Bear Lake! We took the new car, an 01 Ford Escape, and were pleased with how well it ran. Emmett fell asleep, we put the sunroof down (woohoo!), and climbed the roads into the mountains with ease. We stopped at a lookout point over the lake for a couple of scenic pictures.
Once we got to the cabin we had a great time visiting and playing with family. Emmett loved the beach! He played in the sand and kicked back and relaxed with a nice cold sippy-cup of milk.
The lake was so cold that we couldn't bring ourselves to torture Emmett by forcing him into glacial water. So we took him over to the swimming pool at the condos and let him splash around there instead. This time he went right into the water like it was second nature-- no tears at all! You can bet that I was glad that I'd broken him into pools before the trip.
That night when Emmett had fallen asleep, Casey and I went geocaching. It was the first time we've ever tried it and we had a wonderful time! Before leaving for our trip we had purchased a cheap handheld GPS and some items to exchange. (If you don't know what geocaching is, go to this website http://www.geocaching.com/default.aspx) We got to use the 4WD a little on the dirt roads and then walked along a trail that led to a great view. Casey spotted the geocache first! There was nothing great in it, but we were excited anyway! Not only were we successful in finding our first cache, but we saw a sage grouse, a rabbit, and heard a freaky bird/insect that sounded kind of like a bear! Emmett stayed asleep the entire time we were gone, and Casey and I enjoyed the first date we've had in a LONG time. We have a new little baby hiking back pack for Emmett and we hope to do a lot more geocaching as a family in the future.
On Saturday we took Emmett out on the boat Craig rented. He loved it and was giggling the whole time... until he fell asleep!
As we left Bear Lake to go home we saw a moose! We pulled over to film it and it was walking right toward our car until two other vehicles pulled up for pictures as well and scared it away. I got a video but it's pretty shaky since I was so excited.
Emmett stayed awake the whole trip home... through traffic back ups and thunderstorms alike! We wish he had been this happy the whole way back, but unfortunately much of the time he was screaming mad. When we got home his eyes were puffy and red and he slept like a rock the whole night!
We've had a wonderful summer so far and can't wait to have many more adventures before the next school year approaches!

Yeah! I'm so happy you're geocaching now. Isn't it funny how excited you get to find a box filled with cheap trinkets?!
