Six Months

So Emmett turned 6 months a couple of weeks ago, but we've been pretty busy around here so I'm just glad I'm getting to an update at all!

At Emmett's doctor's appointment last week he weighed 15.92lbs (18th percentile) and was 25.98in (28th percentile).

Emmett over the last couple of months has become a MUCH better nap taker, which makes his mommy and daddy very happy. He also tends to crash for the night at around 7:30 or 8pm and sleeps pretty much through the night. Sometimes he will still wake up around 5am and need a snack, but he's great at going back to bed and I'm generally waking up around that time anyway. Lately he's started waking up crying a couple of times each night within the first few hours after we put him to bed and I'm not sure why. He's easy to put back to sleep though-- we just cuddle him for a minute and lay him right back down.

Shortly after hitting the 5 month mark Emmett began to roll from his back to his tummy. He does it so often now that we can't keep him on his back for more than a few seconds. Unfortunately, he's not very good at rolling from tummy to back and usually just starts to get mad after laying on his tummy for a while. We have seen him do it, so we know he can... he just chooses not to. Also, he only rolls to the right, never the left so far.

Now that he knows how to roll over so well, Emmett won't sleep on his back anymore. It drove me crazy at first with worry, but at his appointment, the doctor told us it was alright and not to worry about it. He said the danger from SIDS is pretty much over now and that Emmett will be just fine. Still, it makes me nervous sometimes when I see his face get smashed into the mattress like it does.

Two great discoveries Emmett has made are his toes and his tongue. He is always grabbing his toes, playing with his feet, staring at his legs and holding them up over his head. It's adorable. And he can't keep his tongue inside his mouth. He's always sticking it out, twisting it and turning it. I'm pretty convinced that this is a child who will be able to touch his nose with his tongue someday. It's pretty hilarious to always see him sticking his tongue out at everyone all the time.

Bath time continues to be a favorite. Tonight when we were giving Emmett a bath he really got into the splashing. He gets a huge goofy grin on his face, kicks with his legs and pounds on the water with his arms until his mom and dad are good and soaked. Whenever we pull him out he whines about it and reaches back toward the tub. We have a cute video that I'll try to post, but our program isn't working so you'll just have to wait until it is.

Emmett ate rice cereal for the very first time last Sunday and we caught that on film too. Look forward to the video post-- it's hilarious! He didn't quite know what to think of it at first, but by the end of it he was bypassing the spoon to reach for the whole bowl. In just a few days he's gotten a little better at eating, but he's still just as messy as can be and Casey and I nearly die laughing every time we try to feed him.

We're still working on sitting up unassisted. He can hover for a while but that's all. And nothing makes this boy happy like standing up. While I used to worry that he didn't care about toys, his whole world revolves around them now. He even goes to sleep holding tight to his little blue stuffed dog or his silly frog face rattle and when we come get him in the morning he is frequently still holding onto them. He growls with a deep gurgle in the back of his throat when he's extremely happy and also when he's getting frustrated. His laugh is HILARIOUS and oh so contagious! He will frequently become hysterical with laughter right before becoming grumpy and going down for his nap or bedtime.

A month or so ago, Emmett made friends with the custodian at my school (he has a beard) and it paid off! The custodian came to me later and told me that he had this great little bouncer molded like a car in his basement that he used for his grandkids. Since they've grown up, he asked me if we wanted it for Emmett. It amazes me how kind and thoughtful people are-- Emmett is in heaven to have such a cool toy, and certainly it's something we never would have splurged for on our own.

That's pretty much all I can think of for now. We are having such a wonderful time with our sweet Bubba. We've been warned that he will probably start crawling here in another couple of months. I have to admit I'm kind of hoping he will start late on that one. The apartment isn't quite ready for it yet!
